What We Introduced
On August 16, 2026 we introduced the KOUNGSUN Digital Shade Matching Device, a handheld instrument for shade selection that DentaSource Direct now carries. It is a small device with a charging cradle, sized to sit on a bracket table and be picked up mid appointment.
What a Digital Shade Matching Device Does
Shade selection has traditionally been done by eye, holding a shade tab against the tooth and deciding which one is closest. It works, and every clinician has done it for years, but it depends on conditions that change constantly: the light in the room, the time of day, how long the operator has been staring at the tooth, and whether the patient is wearing something bright.
A digital shade matching device takes that reading with a sensor instead. It is placed against the tooth surface, it uses its own controlled light source, and it returns a shade value. Because the light and the geometry are the same every time, two readings taken on different days in different rooms are comparable in a way that two eyes are not.
Where It Helps
The obvious case is a single anterior crown or veneer next to natural teeth, where the margin for error is small and a remake is expensive for everyone. A recorded shade value also travels better than a description. The laboratory receives a value rather than a note that says A2 with a question mark beside it.
It helps with whitening cases too, where the useful thing is not the absolute shade but the change. A reading before treatment and a reading after gives the patient something concrete instead of a memory of how the teeth looked a month ago.
Fitting It Into the Day
The device is meant to be quick. It charges in its cradle between patients, and the reading itself is a chairside step rather than a separate appointment. Nothing about it replaces clinical judgement. It gives the clinician a second, repeatable opinion to weigh against what the eye is telling them.
Why It Matters
For a Philippine clinic taking on more aesthetic work, the cost of a shade that is slightly wrong is not the shade. It is the remake, the extra visit, and the patient's confidence in the plan. An instrument that removes some of the guesswork from that decision pays for itself in cases that do not come back.
